In December 2010, Lindgren hired Joel Lovell, formerly story editor at GQ magazine, as deputy editor. As part of a series of new staff hires upon assuming his new role, Lindgren first hired then–executive editor of O, The Oprah Magazine Lauren Kern to be his deputy editor and then hired then-editor of TNR.com, The New Republic magazine's website, Greg Veis, to edit the "front of the book" section of the magazine. In September 2010, as part of a greater effort to reinvigorate the magazine, Times editor Bill Keller hired former staff member and then-editor of Bloomberg Businessweek, Hugo Lindgren, as the editor of The New York Times Magazine. The Sunday Magazine also features a puzzle page, edited by Will Shortz, that features a crossword puzzle with a larger grid than those featured in the Times during the week, along with other types of puzzles on a rotating basis (including diagramless crossword puzzles and anacrostics). "Consumed", Rob Walker's regular column on consumer culture, debuted in 2004. Klosterman left in early 2015 to be replaced by a trio of authors- Kenji Yoshino, Amy Bloom, and Jack Shafer-who used a conversational format Shafer was replaced three months later by Kwame Anthony Appiah, who assumed sole authorship of the column in September 2015. In 2011, Ariel Kaminer replaced Cohen as the author of the column, and in 2012 Chuck Klosterman replaced Kaminer. The year 1999 saw the debut of "The Ethicist", an advice column written by humorist Randy Cohen that quickly became a highly contentious part of the magazine. Safire's column steadily gained popularity and by 1990 was generating "more mail than anything else" in the magazine. In 1979, the magazine began publishing Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist William Safire's " On Language", a column discussing issues of English grammar, use and etymology. When, in 1970, The New York Times introduced its first op-ed page, the magazine shifted away from publishing as many editorial pieces. During his tenure, writers such as Leo Tolstoy, Thomas Mann, Gertrude Stein, and Tennessee Williams contributed pieces to the magazine. Editor Lester Markel, an "intense and autocratic" journalist who oversaw the Sunday Times from the 1920s through the 1950s, encouraged the idea of the magazine as a forum for ideas. Du Bois and Albert Einstein to numerous sitting and future U.S. In its early years, The New York Times Magazine began a tradition of publishing the writing of well-known contributors, from W. In 1897, the magazine published a 16-page spread of photographs documenting Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, a "costly feat" that resulted in a wildly popular issue and helped boost the magazine to success. The creation of a "serious" Sunday magazine was part of a massive overhaul of the newspaper instigated that year by its new owner, Adolph Ochs, who also banned fiction, comic strips, and gossip columns from the paper, and is generally credited with saving The New York Times from financial ruin. In the early decades, it was a section of the broadsheet paper and not an insert as it is today. Its first issue was published on September 6, 1896, and contained the first photographs ever printed in the newspaper. The magazine is noted for its photography, especially relating to fashion and style. It features articles longer than those typically in the newspaper and has attracted many notable contributors. The New York Times Magazine is an American Sunday magazine supplement included with the Sunday edition of The New York Times. 1,623,697 per week (as part of Sunday paper)

The coax acts as a pass through so you can continue to use the coax cable for its initial purpose - you know cable TV or an ATSC antenna (not compatible with satellite). Each one has two coax connections and one Ethernet. You need two devices to get started, but can use up to 16. So I am trying to get a pair of MOCA adapters. I hooked it to my coax and the ethernet to my old gaming desktop from 2009. ScreenBeam Bonded MoCA 2. I went from upload and download speeds of 70 mbps to 760/960 mbps. When I got rid of all the clothes I didn’t wear, I changed my closet to an active space. I had a very hard time making outfits and often couldn’t find what I needed. That means I had my frequently-worn clothes mixed up with my rarely-worn clothes. Before I switched to a small wardrobe, my closet was a mixed use space: it was a combination of both active and storage space. This principle is at the core of minimalism in the home: remove the excess to focus on the things you really love and use everyday.Īn example of this principle is my master bedroom closet. This happens because the things we use frequently get mixed up among the items that we rarely use. This is when things start to get overwhelming. Often spaces in our homes become a combination of an active space and a storage space. This way, upon entering the house we (kids included) can easily put things away exactly where they go. By scaling back to only include actively used items, everything now has a place. That means every single item within it is used on a daily (or sometimes weekly) basis. The first step in taming this chaos was to turn this into an active space, as opposed to a storage space. We have eliminated the chaos by simplifying our drop zone to include only items we are actively using. If you aren’t careful, it can quickly turn to chaos. There’s a good chance it will end up as the clutter catch-all spot. Usually it’s right inside the door. It’s the space that the shoes, mail, jackets, backpacks, and all else lands upon entry. This post contains affiliate links.Įvery house has a drop zone. This post is a part of a series called “Peek Inside My Minimalism.” In this series, I show you a glimpse of what minimalism really looks like in my life. It needs to be between 34.5 and 35.5 degrees Celsius (approximately 94-96 degrees Fahrenheit) or it adversely impacts the brood (eggs, larvae, and pupae), so the bees work to maintain that ideal temperature in various ways, such as fanning with their wings to cool or shivering to warm. Honey bees are persnickety about the temperature of their home. “From there, the design of the hive screamed of thermal inefficiencies.” Cook and colleagues’ research on the thermal properties of typical hive boxes quantifies their leakiness and highlights the potential impacts on the bees and their keepers. “I had a small bee yard peppered with sensors to determine how the bee hive itself behaves thermally,” he says. While studying industrial design as an undergraduate, Cook looked at how to build a better hive box. Cook says via email that the commonly used wooden hive boxes “are designed for the human first, with the bee a vague afterthought.” candidate at Queensland University of Technology in Australia and lead author on the study, published in March in the Journal of Economic Entomology, which examined the thermal dynamics of the traditional managed honey bee hive box. Honey bees just can’t win.ĭaniel Cook is a Ph.D. And occasionally someone comes along and takes away part of the insulation (honey). It’s a wooden box based on a nineteenth century design that leaks and gains heat just like you’d expect it would. A new paper in the Journal of Economic Entomology adds another knife: the typical house beekeepers provide for honey bees. European honey bees ( Apis mellifera) suffer from an astonishing array of problems- Varroa mites, hive beetles, foulbrood, chalkbrood, stonebrood, deformed wing virus, 20-plus other viruses, poor diet, predation, pesticide exposure-it’s death by a thousand cuts. Jean Midolle and the various Midolline typefacesĪlix Christie’s novel Gutenberg’s Apprentice presents Peter Schöffer as the designer of the type used in the Gutenberg Bible. Wherever possible, I have just directly linked to online editions of books, articles, or other items instead. I have also included a basic transcript of my presentation, with only minimal footnotes. The ATypI published a video of the presentation after the conference, embedded below. With this presentation, I hope to encourage researchers to uncover more details of his work there. Among other places, his career took him to Belfort, Geneva, and Strasbourg before his trail went cold in Belgium, where he may have died. Jean Midolle was born in or near Besançon in Revolutionary France. Petersburg in Russia, from Edinburgh and Oslo in the north to Vienna in the south. I shall also address the Midolline phenomenon, by which nine loosely related type designs were distributed across dozens of foundries in the western world during the second half of the nineteenth century, from St. This presentation explains how Haenel’s Midolline typeface quickly inspired a new category of nineteenth-century type classification and became a term that printers briefly used as shorthand for all roman/blackletter hybrids. By this definition, Jean Midolle might be Germany’s first type designer, although he was almost certainly unaware that Eduard Haenel’s typefoundry in Berlin used a page from a pattern book of his as a design source. They may not have even understood the process behind those products’ manufacture. German design historians define nineteenth-century designers as people who created drawings determining new products’ appearances but were not involved in their production. These originated in Germany during the nineteenth century. Back to the original post: An introduction to Midollineįor the 2018 ATypI conference in Antwerp, I made a 20-minute presentation about the various Midolline typefaces.
